The Building Season

Love, Advocacy, and the Work of Building a Life for a Child the World Wasn't Designed For

The Building Season is my personal account of motherhood, family, relationships, autism advocacy, and the experiences that have shaped who I am today.

As a mother of four, including a nonverbal autistic son, I've learned that raising children requires more than love and good intentions. It requires patience, adaptability, difficult decisions, and sometimes challenging systems that weren't designed to meet your family's needs.

Throughout the book, I reflect on the realities of advocating for Darrin while navigating my own life, including personal setbacks, changing relationships, grief, and the responsibility of caring for others while continuing to grow as an individual.

I also share how those experiences influenced the creation of Darrin's Voice, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting autistic youth and their caregivers through advocacy, creative engagement, and community connections.

While autism advocacy is an important part of my story, this book is equally about identity, personal growth, and recognizing that our lives continue to evolve beyond the roles and responsibilities we carry.

The Building Season is not a guide to parenting or a story about having all the answers. It's an honest reflection on the experiences, decisions, and lessons that have shaped my life and the work I'm continuing to build.
